During athletic performance socks can catch on nails that are too long or that have rough edges. This can put pressure on the nail bed and cause toe blisters and black nails. To prevent nail problems it is recommended that the toenails should be trimmed squarely with inward filing to remove rough edges. There should be enough nail left on the outside edge (big toe especially) to avoid in-grown toenails.
