Sock Science from Customer Service
Cotton used to be the standard in moisture absorption for clothing. Now, high-tech fibers like CoolMax are designed and engineered to provide maximum moisture-wicking. Basically moisture-wicking means that the sock fibers not only absorb the moisture, but they also help to wick the moisture away from the skin to the exterior of the fiber where it can evaporate. Moisture wicking fibers scientifically control moisture at least 5 times better than natural cotton fibers.
It's really cool stuff. I've actually done my own moisture wicking test by dipping the bottom of a SmartKnit sock into a pan of water with food coloring. After a few minutes I could actually see the red water being pulled up the sock and up and out of the foot area. The sock was also completely dry in under an hour. I tried the same with a regular cotton sock and the sock just stayed wet at the bottom and didn't dry out at all. You can do this same test at home, but if you use water with food coloring in it, the food coloring does not wash out of the sock after testing.

To help keep at-risk feet healthy and infection free, always keep your feet clean. Wash your feet with a mild soap and dry them well (especially between the toes) before putting on socks and shoes. This will help inhibit bacteria and fungal growth.
