Plantar Warts

Warts result from a virus that causes rapid cell growth in the outer layer of your skin. There are various types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), some which tend to cause foot warts. Foot warts, though usually harmless, can sometimes result in infection especially for people with at-risk feet such as those with diabetes, arthritis, or any health condition where protection from irritation is important.

Foot warts are contagious. It is possible to get warts from direct contact with someone who has warts or from towels, rugs and other objects used by an infected person. A plantar wart is the most common type of foot wart. It appears to have black specks in the center and is hard and sometimes painful to the touch.

Prevent Getting or Spreading Foot Warts

Because foot warts are highly contagious, they are easy to spread to the people around you such as your family members. You can help prevent the spreading of foot warts by taking simple precautions.
  • Always wash your hands after touching your warts.
  • Don't pick at, brush, comb, or shave areas with warts. You might want to consider covering your foot warts with a bandage to help prevent contact.
  • If your foot warts are on your toes, use a different nail file or clipper for your toes without any warts.
There are various treatments for foot warts. Talk to your doctor or health care provider if over-the-counter treatments fail.
