Amputation
Help Prevent Foot Amputation
People with diabetes are far more likely to experience leg or foot amputation than other people. This is because people with diabetes are at a higher risk for foot injuries because due to of a neuropathy and artery disease.
Peripheral Neuropathy reduces the feelings in the feet, which often causes the feet and legs to feel numb. Because of this lack of feeling, it is common for people with neuropathy to scrape, cut, and develop
ulcerations on the feet. When these injuries occur, often times reduced blood flow caused by artery disease diminishes the body's ability to heal these wounds. If the wounds become infected, healing is made even more difficult. Leg or foot aAmputation of the affected limb results when healing can not occur and infection can not be treated.
Fortunately, most diabetes related amputations are preventable with the proper precautions.
